Abstract
The IBM France Scientific Center has developed an experimental system based on the IBM Personal Computer to provide assistance to deaf children, both for speech training and for lip-reading. The system consists of a standard IBM Personal Computer system to which a specially designed speech input and processing board has been added. The hardware architecture of the board is described, explaining why a general purpose microprocessor has been preferred over commercially available digital signal signal processors. The board software and its relationship to the software running in the Personal Computer is also detailed.
