Abstract :
An approach to achieving a widely tuneable LC resonator is presented based on the magnetically coupled inductance tuning. It is shown that such scheme exhibits an improved trade-off between the frequency tuning range and the Q-factor (after being made tunable) compared to the conventional capacitance tuning technique. Moreover, when employed as a resonator in variable frequency oscillator circuits, it helps minimise the phase noise generation mechanism caused by up-conversion of low-frequency flicker noise in the added active components. With the use of the coupled inductance approach, a simulated oscillator with 600 MHz tuning range extending from 1.4-2.0 GHz or equivalently over 30% frequency tuning has been demonstrated. The achievable phase noise over the entire oscillation band is better than -100 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset
