Abstract :
Spatial multiplexing (SDM) offers the possibility of multiplying the capacity of a single fiber and enabling a continuation of the era of bandwidth abundance. But will this promise be fulfilled? While the technical prospects for SDM seem bright, success will require the realization of economic benefits.
