Presented is a metric, the ngraph-metric on the set of rational transfer matrices. It generates the same graph topology as the graph metric. However, it avoids the two main drawbacks associated with the graph metric; standard software and algorithms can be used to compute the ngraph-metric, and it gives distances between 0 and ∞
