Abstract :
Summary form only given. This concept of producing fast rise time high voltage pulses using a Flux Compression (FC) technique to drive relatively high impedance loads was proposed by Turchi and Degnan. In this concept the magnetic flux in the inner region of a solenoid is compressed by discharging a high current and density plasma through the region interior to the solenoid. A coaxial plasma gun is used to provide the high current discharge at high magnetic Reynolds numbers. The compressed field produces a fast rise time voltage pulse in a secondary solenoidal coil sandwiched between the outer wall of the fast moving plasma and the main solenoid. The feasibility and results of both coaxial and inverse z-pinch geometries are presented.
