Abstract
This paper describes the design of a modular solution for remote bio-signal monitoring and processing. The main purpose is to increase health care efficiency by providing critical and intensive care efficiency with lack of specialized personnel with access to off-site specialized patient diagnosis and therapeutic indications. The system modularity allows the integration of specific processing modules, such as diagnostic or compression algorithms. This solution was integrated into an existing telemedicine platform developed by Portugal Telecom. Currently the system is used to support professionals´ decision support workflow concerning the transfer of critically ill paediatric patients between hospitals. Moreover, it introduces automation and mobile monitoring mechanisms in the process of transport of patients to specialized medical facilities that can be exploited into the future.
