Abstract :
To test the services of broadband integrated services digital networks and the technology to deliver these services a second-generation prototype switching system has been developed. The system consists of an asynchronous transfer mode switching module that uses a multistage self-routeing network. A flexible subscriber feeder loop network is achieved by using a fiber loop multiplexer and remote electronics. The user-network interface will be based on a distributed queue dual bus or an optical passive bus with polling request technology. Image-based applications for business, science, engineering, medicine, and graphic design will be among the first to be deployed. Multimedia applications with simultaneous image, voice, video, and data will make full use of ATM switching capabilities. It is projected that widespread residential use will occur as the cost of providing B-ISDN decreases and marketable residential services are identified
