Abstract :
A hybrid discrete cosine transform system has been developed within the framework of the European project EU 256, with the goal of transmitting high-definition television signals of contribution quality at about 140 Mb/s and 4:2:2 signals at 32 to 45 Mb/s. The joint optimization of coding algorithms, framing structure, and codec architecture will provide for good picture quality and performance with regard to channel errors. The choice of variable-length code has been demonstrated to be very important not only for the coding efficiency but also for performance in the presence of errors
