Abstract :
Packet contention is a critical issue in optical packet switching network which occurs at a switching node whenever two or more packets try to leave the switch fabric on the same output port, on the same wavelength, at the same time. In this paper, we investigate the performance of our previously proposed shared fiber delay line based two-stage optical packet switch for contention resolution. The performance of the switch is assessed in terms of throughput and average delay under both random and bursty traffic. In this paper, optical cost of the switch is determined based on fiber-to-chip coupling in order to estimate the hardware complexity, scalability. A series of computer simulations are performed in order to evaluate the performance of the switch. Simulation result indicates that proposed switch achieves satisfactory performance due to efficient use of buffer space.
