Abstract :
The use of receptable lasers for optical sources in single mode fiber systems for telecomms and datacomms is reviewed. The factors that influence the choice between a receptacle laser and a fiber-pigtailed package are discussed. A novel package design capable of gigabit-per-second operation is described. The design considered meets the requirements of high-speed operation, reproducibility of coupled power, ease of cleaning, and operation over a wide temperature range. The major advantage of flexibility of use of receptacles, which comes from the ability to easily disconnect the laser from the fiber, can therefore be obtained without sacrificing performance
