  • Abstract
Centralized control using wide-area measurement signals has been suggested to enhance the dynamic performance of large interconnected power systems. However, the impact of time delays introduced by remote signal transmission and processing has to be considered. This paper investigates the wide- area FACTS controller design problem in the presence of delayed input signals in wide-area measurement system (WAMS). Pade approximation method is used to express time delay and system state space model implying time delay is represented. The effect of delayed input signal is demonstrated by eigenvalue analysis. The effect might drive eigenvalue of the system matrix to undesirable places on complex plane, and even make the system unstable. Genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to design effective wide-area FACTS controller in order to diminish the effect of time delay. Simulations on a two-machine test system are performed to substantiate obtained results.
