Abstract
A study into the trade-off between filter order and complexity (where complexity is a measure of the chip area required to implement the filter) is performed for low-order elliptic IIR filters. It is found that the order at which minimum complexity occurs is about 2% higher than the order produced by order estimators for infinite-precision coefficients
