Abstract
In bringing together the monitoring and control for the whole business into a single operation and location, Yorkshire Water have taken an integrated approach to the IT and people aspects of the change. The result is a control centre places the emphasis on flexibility. It combines the benefits from standardisation of systems and procedures with the demands of a highly variable workload and needs of individual shift workers. This case study presents a pragmatic view on the realities of implementing major control room changes. The drivers behind the change are outlined together with the key features of that change in terms of systems, environment and people. It goes on to discuss some of the major challenges that have been overcome and those still being tackled
