Abstract
As the overall efficiency of power devices increases it becomes important, and worthwhile, to tackle sources of loss which may have been passed by in the past. One such loss is the radiative “inefficiency” at threshold. The purpose of this tutorial is to give an account of the measurement of the radiative quantum efficiency and the factors which influence it in a quantum well and in the context of high power laser diodes.
