Abstract
The spectral characteristics of cross-phase modulation (XPM) and self-phase modulation (SPM) in multi-span intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM-DD) optical systems are investigated. As constituent parameters, span-length and channel spacing, both are found to be strongly influential regarding XPM and SPM. Short period dispersion managed fibers (SPDMF), to suppress the XPM and SPM induced crosstalk, are found to serve the best in comparison with non-zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZDSF) and also dispersion compensated fiber (DCF).
