Abstract
Signalling systems are central to the operation of railways and are becoming increasingly integrated into the overall railway network. Because of its knowledge of the train´s position, the modern signalling system can be used and applied in innovative ways to assist in controlling rail operations, enhancing the capability of other systems and providing solutions to overcome safety and operational constraints. This paper examines some of the more important signalling aspects and their relationship to the rail infrastructure.
