Abstract
SOAs nowadays are used in many ways in applications that use fiber optics technology. If we look just at networking applications, there are two clear winners: data networks and fiber to the home. We will discuss the emerging use of the SOA in extended range 100Gb Ethernet, and their use in next generation passive optical networks, both as amplifiers and as colourless signal sources.
