Abstract
Summary form only given. We describe the enabling opportunities and challenges for photonic circuits, both active and passive, in evolving lightwave networks. A survey and status of key circuits, including tunable and array lasers, tunable filters, integrated multi-channel receivers, wavelength-selective routers, wavelength converters and cross-connect arrays will be given. Key network issues and technology obstacles will also be discussed
