Abstract
The aim of this paper is to give some design hints for a synchronous interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor that is for a high frequency signal injection based sensorless control. Such a control technique relies on the rotor saliency for the detection of the rotor position, and it is particularly effective at zero and low motor speed. Some side effects, as saturation and cross coupling, may compromise the control performance. This paper points out the link between the geometric structure and magnetic configuration of the IPM motor and the response to the injected high frequency signal. An accurate element model of the IPM motor, validated by experimental measurements, is used to this purpose
