  • Abstract
We consider a micro-cellular mobile radio system in which the ATM network is extended across the radio interface. Many ATM connections will be variable rate and this can be exploited to yield a spectral efficiency improvement. Methods considered for realising this improvement include conventional statistical multiplexing, interference averaging and dynamic channel allocation (DCA). A comparison of the theoretically achievable efficiency of these schemes is made. The reduction in the achievable spectral efficiency which occurs when convolution based ATM connection admission control (CAC) algorithms are used is also determined
