Abstract :
In this paper, the distribution of the traffic channel occupancy time in a cell of a PMSS (personal mobile satellite system) providing telephone services to mobile subscribers is studied. This parameter is of importance for PMSS analysis, design and dimensioning, as well as for the selection of channel allocation and handover strategies. First, channel occupancy time IPFs (inverse probability functions) of new and handed over calls are derived assuming infinite and, in a second step, negative exponentially distributed call duration. It is shown that not taking into account the Earth´s rotation causes systematic errors in the channel occupancy time IPF of handed over calls. Thus, a modified IPF is derived taking into account the Earth´s rotation and orbital inclination. Finally, the overall channel occupancy time IPF in a satellite cell is presented
