Abstract :
The Center for Telecommunications Education and Research at UAB has introduced a new system architecture for telepathology. The prototype TelePathSM system combines efficient bandwidth utilization and lossless transfer of “store and forward” digital imaging systems with the real-time control found in video systems. The architecture of the system is constrained by requirements for compatibility with surgical procedures for diagnosis of microscopic tissue biopsies. To date, the prototype system has enabled remotely located UAB pathologists to consult with each other and make accurate diagnoses of “frozen sections” in real-time
