Abstract
This paper introduces a novel method for optimizing the gain of a dielectric lens antenna in a cylindrical configuration, illuminated by planar microstrip antennas. Ray reflections involving the substrate layer lead to interference patterns for the gain. Instead of minimizing these reflections by quarter-wave-coatings, it is shown that they can be used for gain maximization. With geometrical optics analysis, parameter combinations for maximum gain are identified, that are confirmed by full wave electromagnetic simulation and by measurements.
