Abstract :
This work presents a rigorously derived, accurate and realistic criterion to fix both minimum and operational separations for airspace regions controlled with radar sensors. It considers the characteristics of deployed sensors and data processing system to design the longitudinal separation standards. This explicit relation between separation criterion and system capability would allow a re-definition of operative separations, directly affecting the final capacity, based on enhancements of current multi-radar systems. The full criterion, making use of simulation and statistical reasoning, is generically presented first, and then applied to a sample real-world scenario, corresponding to terminal manoeuvring area (TMA) conditions.
