Abstract
Numerical distance relays are widely used for the protection of long transmission lines in the recent times. This paper aims at simulating and implementing a numerical three-step distance relaying for transmission lines. The simulation of three-step protection has been carried out using PSCAD software considering a typical 220 kV transmission line. The hardware implementation of the same numerical relay done with the help of eZdsp F2812 kit comprises of Digital Signal Processor (DSP) TMS320F2812, on board Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) and other external analog circuits. Both the simulation and the hardware results of the modelled relay are presented. The designed hardware set up was tested for various test cases.
