Abstract
A modulation technique based on multidimensional M -ary signal sets generated by the combination of frequency- and phase-shift-keying is considered for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and fading channels. The strategy for the design of these sets is to provide good correlation properties for the Gaussian channel and intrinsic diversity to yield a low error probability with good spectral efficiency for the fading channel. The signaling format consists of w carriers transmitted over separate, uncorrelated channels. Each carrier is phase modulated through p discrete phase shifts. The effect of the dimensionality provided by this system is analyzed, and the tradeoffs with spectral efficiency and error probability are discussed for both channels
