Abstract :
The use of erasure insertion techniques can result in increased coding gains in frequency-hop spread-spectrum communication systems. Viterbi´s ratio threshold test is used with Reed-Solomon codes to determine which code symbols should be erased before decoding. The system performance in partial-band and multiple-access interference environments is analyzed and compared to errors-only decoding and to errors-and-erasures decoding with perfect side information. When interference is strong, large coding gains are observed and error probabilities are reduced by several orders of magnitude
