Abstract
Multilayer ceramic actuators have seen significant development in the several decades since their development. Applications can be split into two general groups: those employing stack-type devices for micropositioning and point-source control; and those using plate-type devices for applying force over an area, as for structure vibration control. We propose consideration of a “new” type of multilayer actuator, similar to the surface mounted ceramic capacitor, that is substantially lower in cost and useful as a component for emerging integrated smart materials
