Abstract
The increasing technical requirements of Grid Codes and the significant changes in the pattern and level of power transfers across the system are triggering new technological challenges for the power system transient stability. Turbogenerators are major components in the electrical power system and are required to remain connected to the grid in case of severe transmission system voltage transient variations. In order to improve the transient stability, a novel power electronics generator breaker concept is presented, which increases the reconnection possibilities of the generator to the grid and allows to extend the critical clearing time. The operating principle of the enhanced generator breaker is illustrated and its advantages for the transient stability are demonstrated with numerical simulation of an existing power generation unit.
