Abstract
In microcellular systems, cell overlapping can be effectively adopted to improve the teletraffic performance of the mobile terminal population. Anyway, the greatest advantages are mainly achievable by those users, located within an overlapping region, which can exploit the opportunity of receiving acceptable radio signals from more base stations. Effective resource assignment policies are thus necessary to make users located far from overlapping regions benefit from this feature as well. To this aim, a dynamic channel allocation scheme, based on the concepts of reserve channels and protection threshold, is proposed in this paper. A detailed description is given and, by means of analytical tools, it is shown that better performance compared to traditional schemes are attainable under a wide range of load distribution
