Abstract :
The user capacity and spectrum efficiency of a microcellular mobile radio system using a fast frequency-hopped (FFH) spread-spectrum modulation technique are evaluated. Additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and a Rice distribution with random-to-specular ratio (K) are used to model the microcellular environment. The probability of bit error for noncoherent detection of on-off-keying (OOK) modulation operating in a Ricean fading channel is derived as a closed-form expression. At an average bit error rate 10-3 and considering only the degradation due to mutual interference, the system capacity and the spectrum efficiency are found to be 209 users and 33.44%, respectively. With K=-7 dB and a mean signal-to-noise ratio of 20 dB, the system capacity and spectrum efficiency are found to be 169 and 27.2%, respectively, at the same error rate. This capacity is roughly 1.21 times that of a cellular system
