Abstract :
Insulation is a key technology in electrical equipment. It influences how high a temperature and how small an envelope the equipment may be designed for, whether it is the solid state drive or the rotating machine. It follows that specification of the insulation is an important aspect of this technology. Insulation coordination takes account of the surroundings as well as defining clearances and other distances. It is based on the stresses to which the equipment is likely to be subjected during its anticipated lifetime. The most crucial phase for this procedure is during the development of new technologies since this is when the greatest uncertainties exist. The advent of pulsed drives is creating significant challenges for the design engineer as well as the contracts department of companies exploiting this area of engineering
