Good governance in energy efficiency - Strategy to shape public attitudes on energy efficiency

The special focus on historic buildings is important as little progress has been made in this respect, although it is a crucial problem in most European cities. The fact that public institutions are often located in historic buildings makes this problem relevant for decision-makers themselves. Fossil fuels heating these buildings are expensive and further difficulties arise from the complexity of regulations that need to be complied with and also from possible social implications. How can GovernEE Central Europe Project help? GovernEE aims at rationalising energy use of public buildings, with a special focus on historic buildings, by approaching the problem from the point of view of good governance: · Strengthen the responsibilities of policy makers and the wider public regarding energy efficiency; · Incorporate energy efficiency measures into decision-making processes of municipalities by promoting a cross-sectoral approach; · Strengthen policy makers´ planning competences by developing integrated urban development plans prioritising energy efficiency goals.
