The article provides a review of optical crossconnects systems and technologies with reference to the factors driving WDM networking, WDM routing elements, the requirements for reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers/optical crossconnects (OADMs/OXCs), WDM ring network testbed experimental results, and the key functional blocks for transmission and routing systems
