Abstract :
SAFENET, a complete communications architecture based on the International Organization for Standardization´s Open System Interconnection (ISO/OSI) reference model, is discussed. SAFENET local area network (LAN) requirements include a high-performance communication network that minimizes latency, maximizes throughput, possesses an inherent fault tolerance, provides a reasonable degree of security, and could continue to function in a combat environment without performance degradation. The ISO/OSI layers are outlined, and the respective SAFENET protocols that provide the services to support the functions are described
