Abstract
In this paper, we examine how interruptions an manifested in the intonational structure of a discourse. Such interactions come about because of the mutual negotiating to satisfy the differing needs, interests and knowledge states of participants in a conversation. The specific pitch height of an interruption is found to be determined jointly by the need to attract attention, the intensity of the emotion present, and the strength of signal needed to overcome the attention and focus on the current topic
