    The high complexity of optical communication systems requires computer-aided analysis in order to reduce costs and optimise system performance. Furthermore, it supports the detailed understanding of the phenomena which may impose performance penalties. We present a general and efficient simulation tool suitable for the theoretical analysis of WDM systems. The study emphasises adequate component models including all relevant effects and an efficient, modular implementation
