Abstract
Using signal processing functions of optics, RF signals with desired phases and amplitudes can be obtained. In this paper, a new configuration for an optical signal processor suitable for a large-scale phased array antenna and ultra-high speed beam steering is proposed. The simple combination of orthogonal one dimensional (1D) scanning of signal and reference lightwaves can provide RF signals for 2D beam steering. The proposed method also has the potential for ultra-high speed beam steering over 1 GHz utilizing optical switching technologies. Experimental results at 25 GHz are shown and calculated radiation patterns from measured results at 81 (9×9) points demonstrate successful 2D beam scanning
