Abstract
Describes an experimental study to investigate the effectiveness of applying a supervisor to enhance the performance of a fuzzy logic controller for position control of a DC motor in the presence of a large variation in the inertia load coupled to the motor. The proposed supervisor uses "if and then rules", which are formulated based on past experience, to adjust a gain setting of the fuzzy logic controller every sampling period until a desired set of criteria is achieved. Experimental results show that the performance of the fuzzy logic controller is significantly enhanced by the proposed supervisor over a wide range of inertia loads and for different system gains.
