Abstract :
A leaky waveguide (LWG) has been developed for an automated highway system (AHS). This LWG enables continuous communication between vehicles and roadside units at the frequency of 5.8 GHz. By studying slot spacing and slot length of LWG, the developed LWG met required characteristics that were based on the 2.6 GHz leaky coaxial cable used for AHS experiments in Japan. For practical use, effects of wave reflected from road surface and of shadowing, which is caused by the shielding of other cars, were measured. The results showed that space diversity of vehicle antennas can reduce these effects. By using this LWG, continuous communication can be achieved
