Abstract
Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOAs) have shown significant promise for all-optical wavelength conversion due to their highly nonlinear behavior. Conversion has been demonstrated using both cross-gain and cross-phase modulation, the latter in both integrated interferometer designs as well as filter arrangements following an SOA. It is imperative to understand in detail the SOA saturation and recovery dynamics both to optimize wavelength converter design and to examine practicality of wavelength conversion at speeds beyond 40 Gb/s
