Abstract :
The United States Department of Transportation ITS Joint Program Office is funding an ambitious program of standards development in the US to support more rapid deployment of ITS. The paper discusses the importance of standards in the context of accelerating ITS deployment, with references to specific funded standards efforts which support this goal. Standards discussed include NTCIP, the ITE traffic management data dictionary, the ITE transit communication interface profiles, and the ASTM/IEEE dedicated short range communications standards. Of the standards currently funded through US DOT, these four standards have a particularly large effect on deployment of ITS infrastructure
