Abstract
The paper introduces the intelligent instrument concept and shows how it is possible to optimise the supervision of intelligent instrument based distributed architectures. In a first step, we show that the services proposed by the intelligent instruments can be organized, according to the constraints of the required application, into a "menu graph". From this graph, we deduce the application supervisory language, which contains all the high level requests satisfying the application constraints. In a second step, we find the optimal sequence of the supervisory language that transfers the system from a given steady state operating system to another one.
