Abstract
The wavelet transform is becoming more and more appealing for video coding; the choice of appropriate filter banks is a critical issue that significantly affects the quality of the coded images. Nowadays, two main families of filters are used: orthogonal and biorthogonal; each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. For the latter family, we have introduced a measure of the spectral alias between subbands introduced by the filters and have evaluated it for several filter banks. From the preliminary experimental results, by simulating a complete coding process on a set of test images, it appears that this measure could help the designer to predict the performance of a given filter bank
