Abstract
Modern power system operation is monitored mainly by SCADA systems. Unfortunately, the receivable data is suitable only for system monitoring and control and is not applicable for detailed and complete investigation of fast system processes. Therefore, to enhance power system reliability in real time, more advanced technology is needed. The solution is WAMS (wide area monitoring system) system that uses PMU (phasor measurement unit) technology to collect information about the system at very high sampling rate. In this paper Estonian and Baltic interconnected power system behaviour and benefits of using WAMS and possible solutions to enhance system reliability are described and analysed.
