Abstract
The author describes the distributed instructional environment (DIE), is an object-based computing environment that defines a framework for computer-aided instruction (CAI). The DIE provides a tutoring system for classroom instructors and establishes a generic development system for researchers in knowledge-based tutoring. Distributing the CAI environment over a network places lessons in a national database of distributed tutorials and CAI modules in the hands of experts in their own field. The DIE provides an excellent means of sharing the responsibility of development and delivery of engineering drill and practice tutorials between schools as well as industry
