Abstract
Domain name system (DNS) is very important in the Internet. However, it is controlled by very a few people, which is against the Internet spirit: freedom and equality. The root name servers do not distribute properly, causing low efficiency and reliability. In this paper, we propose a free DNS: P2PDNS based on P2P philosophy. Our main idea is free competition and no center. The authority of name resolution is determined by the public. P2PDNS is a superset of the current DNS, adding with components for competition. The current DNS would still work as part of it. All DNS problems (e.g. traffic load and name collision) are solved by competition. In P2PDNS, the root name servers would be distributed properly around the world, which makes name resolution faster and more reliable. We use Java language and BIND software to realize P2PDNS. The tests show that it can work well. The traffic load can be balanced automatically
