Stuart J. Nelson, MD, FACMI is the Head of the Medical Subject Headings Sections at the US National Library of Medicine. The Subject Headings of MeSH are used to index the biomedical literature, available widely through PubMed. He is also responsible for the production of the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) and for RxNorm, a controlled vocabulary covering clinical drugs. His research in informatics has been predominantly in the area of vocabulary design, control, and use. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics. Dr. Nelson studied mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley as an undergraduate. He obtained his medical degree from the State University of New York in Brooklyn. After almost 20 years of teaching and practicing internal medicine, he left academic medicine to take the position at the NLM.
