Abstract
Wireless LAN standards have enormous potential to be developed as broadband access networks for future Internet applications supporting multimedia traffic. However, currently deployed IEEE 802.11 standards have little or no QoS support functions built into the MAC layer. The IEEE 802.11e EDCA mechanism is currently being developed to provide QoS functions in the MAC layer based on service differentiation and traffic class prioritization. In this paper, we propose an enhanced ARQ scheme for multimedia traffic, which operates on top of the EDCA mechanism proposed in the IEEE 802.11e draft standard. The performance of the enhanced ARQ algorithm is analyzed using an OPNET simulation model.
