Abstract
Both IPTV and cable digital TV provide means to transform analog TV broadcasting to digital broadcasting. Which will be the winner? The paper compares IPTV and cable digital TV in China from four perspectives: technologies, market demand, business models and regulation. It concludes that they can complement rather than substitute for each other, and will co-petition for a long period of time. IPTV provided by telecom operators will focus on high-end market, whereas cable digital TV offered by cable operators can better satisfy the demand for universal service.
